Bok Center Workshop

Harvard University

Cambridge , U.S.

A group of Harvard graduate students and Boston-area teachers gathered for a three-day workshop led by Doris Sommer and Adriana Gutierrez. Reading an excerpt from Hannah Arendt's "Lectures of Kant's Political Philosophy," the group found themselves frustrated by the dense nature of the text. Through participant-led activities, including black-out poetry, recipe making, and photo scavenger hunt, helped the group break down the text. Participants who left the first session infuriated by the text returned to the final session elated to have the opportunity to share their progress. Beyond that, the teachers immediately implemented "what did we do?" in their own elementary school classrooms and found it to be extremely effective.
